You’re a thought leader, and it’s not ok to just “fit in”.

thought-leader

How often I come across blogs online that are trying to look like everyone else. It’s not that the writers are intentionally trying to look like everyone else (at least I hope not) it just ends up being that way because people seem terrified to do anything that draws attention to themselves outside of the norm.

It’s amusing in a way because the entire point of marketing online is to draw attention to yourself.

I think what irks me the most and saddens me at the same time is the fact that people marketing through written content will attempt to boldly state an opinion, put their foot down on a topic with their chest puffed out and then waffle by the end of the content.

What good does it do you, as a writer and a content marketer, to state a point then buckle? That’s like dumping all your chips into the pot and then folding. It builds no credibility, and in fact dramatically increases the chance that the people reading your content are going to think you’re a headcase.

You can’t be a thought leader if you’re constantly looking behind you at your followers asking “Which way should I go?”

When you say things like

- “We’ll, this is just my opinion”

- “I might be wrong in sharing this…”

- “Feel free to form your own opinion but I think…”

Really? When you’re involved in content marketing, there’s a strategy behind it filled with goals. You’re not doing this to pass time between your 3pm spa treatment and your 5pm naked dip in a mud bath. You’re trying to engage people and you’re writing to elicit a response.

When I think about writing that focuses on getting a response from people, I imagine two great big hands reaching out from the content that snatch the reader up by the collar while the content screams “Do something or Get Out!”

You can waste a lot of time and effort in making a blog that says the same thing as other people, waffling on points to avoid pissing people off or you can actually take the position of a thought leader and do what you originally set out to do. There are literally hundreds of thousands of readers on the net looking.. no BEGGING for someone to stand out and be different. They’ve read all the common trash that other people are peddling. They’ve absorbed that knowledge, processed it, and now they need more input.

Want to be a thought leader? Then quit being a wimp. If you want people to follow, appreciate and respect what you have to say then you need to give them a reason to do so.

Be the first one out of the gate, be the first one over the wall and be the first one running into battle with a sword over your head screaming as you run down the competition like the sorry little nannies they are.
