I actually picked up a great deal from this, and now, I know I will definitely be looking to understand the long-term effect of my actions before I get to social promotion.

I do agree with you 100%...it makes  awhole lot of sense to build a real, long-term asset that will stand the test of time. Build it right, and you can dominate the search engines. All it takes is having a long-term plan and strategy, and understanding and education on what it is you are doing.

Google does change it's algorithms here and there, and I don't think anyone can safely say there understand the workings of these algorithms, so the best way to go is to future-proof your business by building it right.

Great content will get you exactly squat if your site is not found.

Great content below the Google SERP fold will get you a little more than squat.

BTW the fold is even higher now with widescreen monitors as the only option on lappys and in stores.

Great content at #4 will get you just enough out of a search term to break even.

A #1 search term will get you 80% more traffic than the #2 spot and that comes to us from Google in the last month.

So, SEO in itself IS gaming the system. I am not here to make a living, I can do that anywhere and have way more fun doing it then I can at a computer.

I am here to make boat loads of profits, be #1 for my Google terms, be the #1 user of Google Buzz and build a huge AWeber list. That take me away from ever working again. Hence if spamming social bookmarking sites did that I would be doing it even now.

But you may notice in my 2008 comment on this thread #70, I was the first Internet marketer to say "Don't use social bookmarking spam software" and you can Google "Social bookmarking slapdown" and see over 400 posts with my name on them.

So no, I never used SB spam, and shortly after the 2008 slapdown by Google, Jack Humphrey, Michelle McPhearson and Howie all pulled their SB submission applications.

HOWEVER they are the ones that made the real money on this, just like the goldrush, it was the guys selling booze, food, picks and shovels that made the money.

Would I use blackhat apps to gain Google rankings now? YES, but only if the short term rankings made me so much money that I was willing to get the domains I was using banned for life from Google.

I myself am in to for the long run with my 7 domains and 3 products so blackhat is not for me.

Everyone has to remember who the ideal customer is to Google.  It's not the PPC user, Adsense user, or blogger.  It's the end consumer.  The person that looks for information by going to Google.  The number of end user drives the price of PPC.  Google knows that savvy internet marketers and spammers find ways to game the system until Google stops them.  

What stinks about the whole thing is that for people that want to truly focus on great content to share with the world either get left out in the cold or have to resort to at least some of the grey or black hat backlinking tactics to get their content noticed.  

I compare it to steroid use in baseball.  There were some guys that wanted to use steroids no matter what.  Then there were baseball players that didn't want to use steroids but they were losing their jobs to guys using the juice.  They couldn't compete so they had to either use steroids too or lose their jobs.

If the Police(in this case, Google) do a great job and never let anyone game the system then we will be left with nothing but great content.  Goooooo Google.</description>

Now answering your questions, in the first 3 months i can tell i spent about 2 hours a day, commenting on blogs, on forums, socializing in social media sites, building contacts, submiting my own posts and posts from other people. That was it, about 2 hours a day. About your other question, in the last month, month and a half, i have done almost nothing, except going to blogs and not everyday, and my traffic keeps rising. I've also writen lots of articles and press releases in the first month, and i still get a lot of traffic from that. So if there's a time when you don't have the time to be socializing, don't worry, traffic won't stop. 

That's the big difference between socializing, good link building and SEO, in SEO you have to write and act according to the SE wishes, you have to pay atention to any changes in their policies, you have to deal with what they want. With social media and quality link building, the links remain, and your contacts remain, and when you have visitors who keep coming back to your site, those visitors will also bring new visitors, and it keeps growing, that's internet made for people, not for SE's.

I think there's another myth called page ranking and it's importance related to traffic. I have a blog in blogger, it's writen in portuguese and it's dedicated to social causes, in that blog i have a page rank of 2 in google, with my fitness site i have a page rank of 1 in google, and yet i have a lot more traffic in my fitness site than in the other blog, so page rank is not that important when it comes to traffic. I'm not saying it's not important, but it's not that big deal like some people try to paint.</description>
