A new wave of technology companies are understanding the importance of SMSifying (yeah I made that one up) their content for the next generation of computer users that will and are using their mobile devices to keep up with everything from the weather to financial advice… It’s already here.

When I started creating this blog I started looking for technology that could deliver my RSS (blog) content to my readers via their mobile device… The buzz phrase for this is RSS to SMS.

If you look in my subscribe options box you will see a “by Mobile” option that I have never seen any bloggers using. This option is a little bit ahead of its time but with iPhone leading the charge toward making computing completely mobile, this RSS to SMS option could add exposure and revenue to your blogging efforts.

The service that I use to deliver my RSS to SMS is pretty slick. There are only a handful of free services that deliver RSS to SMS and all but one completely suck, IMO. The service I use is from a company called FeedM8. Go ahead and test it out for yourself to see how this works. Click on the cell phone graphic in my subscribe options and then follow the instructions from there.

Within 5 seconds you will receive a text message on your phone asking you to follow a link to confirm on your mobile browser. Once you confirm, you will then begin receiving my blog posts on your cell phone. Another cool feature that FeedM8 offers is monetization of your text messages. FeedM8 will add advertising to your messages that you get paid on. I am still investigating the monetization potential of SMS because it is not going anywhere.

SMS computing (as I like to call it for now) is here and gaining momentum fast… I am making this blog SMS friendly now so that I am not scrambling to keep up when it hits mainstream.

I got the graphic from iStockPhoto.com, it cost me 1 credit… If you want to use this then you’ll have to buy it from the artist there. I imagine that a standardized icon for RSS to SMS is coming… For now I had to make one.

Sign up for FeedM8, it’s free and easy to set up your RSS to SMS feed.

Will a ton of people use RSS to SMS? … I predict it will be mainstream within 2 years. I like to add the option for those that care to use it and for bloggers that care to implement it. The bottom line is there is no way to tell unless you try it out.

Only time will tell how popular this will become…
